ATE-VA Teaching Research Award

ATE-VA has a long and distinguished history in teacher education research and in promoting partnerships between Virginia public schools and Virginia colleges and universities. One of the areas of promising collaboration is teacher research. Both in pre-service and continuing professional practice, research and reflection are key to teacher professional growth and improved student learning.

Inquiry into teaching and learning is the “coin of the realm” in professional preparation. One side of the coin is that of teaching and practice, and on the other side, that of inquiry and research. Teaching and practice inform research, and research and inquiry inform teaching and practice.

Awards

To recognize and promote teacher research and school and college/university partnerships, ATE-VA has established three teacher research awards for Excellence in Teacher Research.

These awards are:

1-2010 APPLICATION Teacher Research Award (rev)

  • Award for Excellence in Pre-Service Teacher Research apre-service Virginia teacher education student

3-2010 APPLICATION Pred-Student Teacher Award rev

  • Award for Excellence in Student Teaching Teacher Research a pre-service Virginia student teacher

2-2008 APPLICATION Student Teacher Award rev

Each award will include a plaque and a monetary award of $100 to $500.  The award is designed to recognize research that contributes to best practice in teaching and student learning.  Those eligible are: full-time teachers in Virginia schools during the year of the award, students who are at any point in a Virginia teacher education program, and students who are in student teaching in a Virginia teacher education program.  The committee may also recommend honorary certificates, without monetary award, to recognize participation in the award program.

Process

  • Applications will be distributed to ATE-VA members in October at the VACTE/ATE-VA conference and through email to all members. Members are encouraged to distribute them through pre-service and in-service courses, school-university partnerships, local school human resources offices, etc. The Executive Director will also send announcements and applications to other state education organizations.
  • Completed applications should be submitted via email to both co-chairs, Dr. Sylvia Auton, (sauton@gmail.com) and to Dr. Pat Shoemaker, ATE Executive Director, (pshoemak@radford.edu). If you encounter difficulties with electronic submission, please contact Dr. Shoemaker (540-831-6374 or 5277)
  • The deadline for submission is March 1, 2010, 5:00 p.m. Co-chairs will acknowledge the receipt of each submission.
  • A committee of ATE/ATE-VA members will review the applications and make recommendations to the co-chairs by March 10st.
  • Applicants will be notified of the awards made by March 10th.
  • Preference will be given to research that has completed the full research cycle, including obtaining and discussing results. We recognize that since the applications must be submitted by March 1st, not all projects might be completed by that time. We suggest that individuals who will be “midstream” with their research go ahead and submit their projects.
  • Award recipients will be invited to present their research projects and to receive their awards at the ATE-VA/VACTE Spring conference.
